Do Christians think being tolerant of homosexuals is the same as encouraging people to be homosexual?
There is a difference, but sometimes the line is blurred. If tolerance of homosexuals means live and let live while speaking up for God’s sexual ethics, it does not encourage homosexuality. However, this has become unusual. Tolerance of homosexuality for many people means refusing to say it is gravely disturbed and sinful, that it spreads fatal diseases, and that it abases a person’s character. Some defend homosexuality as predestined by genetics, and claim that the slightest homosexual temptation indicates a fixed homosexual character. Many are so foolish as to equate homosexual relations with marriage. These accommodations with homosexuality encourage teens to give in to homosexual temptations and to adopt homosexual attitudes while building defensiveness against God’s plan for sexuality.
