Do constructed wetlands require a lot of maintenance?
Constructed wetlands require little maintenance other than protection from human and large animal intrusion. In a properly designed constructed wetland the plants and microbes naturally create their own communities that carry out the cleansing functions of the wetland. An operator will be required to turn the effluent flow on the spring and off again in the fall and to conduct a visual assessment of the constructed wetland periodically. Regular water testing is recommended to monitor the efficacy of the wetland. It is possible that certain species may not colonize well or may not survive from year to year and this will affect the performance of the constructed wetland.
