Do grandparents need to be registered childminders?

No. Apparently grandparents are excluded from needing to register. I guess it’s because they’re family.

My own mother has looked after my 2 boys (now 6 and 11) ever since i went back to part-time work when they were both 8 months old. She looked after them Mon – Fri from 9am – 1pm. She never registered as a childminder, but then, we’ve never paid her in the conventional sense so maybe that is the difference? (We used to pay her petrol costs with our first child, but then she refused payment when we had our second son, so instead now we make sure she has a really special present every year where we spend a lot of money on her). Of course, if your daughter will be paying you and she wishes to make a claim for her childcare costs, then yes you would have to be registered, in order for her to be able to claim anything back. But other than that, i really don’t think so, after all you are family. I’m sure the government will introduce some new law one day that states that anyone looking after any child, whether related or not, will need to register for something at some great cost!
