Do graphic organizers have a purpose in teaching students how to write effectively and creatively?
Graphic organizers have long since been a mainstay in teaching compositional writing. Yet, we still have a nation full of children who do not know how to write effectively and creatively. Why is this? The answer cannot be found within the graphic organizer itself. The organizers are usually well done, and bring concepts to a brain compatible level. So, therefore, the answer lies within the misuse and the continued use of the organizers. So, what are we doing wrong? That is simple. We are using the organizers for too long and never weaning our students off of them. If students are weaned off of the organizers, then they can flourish and become effective, creative, and independent writers. The brain needs the aide of the organizers, but equally so, the brain needs to learn the information contained within the organizer, without the constant use of the organizer.
