Do I have to have braces after underbite correction surgery on my jaw?

If your underbite is small, it’s possible that it may be caused just by your teeth being crooked. If that’s the case, you’ll only need braces. However, if it’s caused by a skeletal deformity, like mine is, you’ll need braces before the surgery to get your teeth in their proper position that they need to be in when you have the surgery, as well as after so your bite can be “fine tuned” after the surgery. Further, braces are needed to attach the surgical hooks for after surgery when you’re either wired or banded shut for healing. Orthognathic surgery nearly always requires orthodontic braces both before and after. Get consultations with several orthodontists before getting a consultation with an oral maxillofacial surgeon.

I am in the same situation as you right now. I have a small under bite and have braces now pre-surgery. Ive had braces now for 7 months and will be having surgery sometime in December. You would need braces both before and after jaw corrective surgery. The braces before surgery will move your teeth the way your surgeon wants it to be positioned, then the surgery will take place correcting your jaw. During the surgery, your braces will stay on your teeth and will not be removed. After surgery, the orthodontist will continue moving your teeth so that it fits your jaw perfectly. (That might take anywhere from 6-9months) So, the answer is yes. you will have braces afterward. There is no going around it…trust me, i asked. Hope that helped!

I had corrective jaw surgery on my upper and lower jaw. My underbite was fixed. You need to consult a few orthodontists and oral & maxillofacial surgeons to be 100% sure. Different surgeons will have a different opinion and therefore different treatment plan for you. In most cases, braces are required before and after surgery. The time required before surgery depends on how well aligned your teeth are and the position of your teeth that your orthodontist wants to move them to. For my case, my lower teeth were pushed forward to make them align with the upper teeth AFTER the lower jaw has been moved back. After the surgery, your surgeon needs to tie your upper teeth and lower teeth together to make sure your jaw heals properly and does not go out of position during the initial healing period. This is done with hooks on your braces and wires/rubber bands. I really can’t see how someone can avoid not having braces to fix a jaw alignment problem. I had the same concerns as you too but I dec
