Do i just need to sign my title over and have the new owner sign and date the title if selling my car?
You may be able to go online or your local vehicle license agency and fill out a sellers report immediatley. Also get a signed document of some type stating that so and so purchsed vehicle, time of day , date, amount and VIN and signed by the new owner. It can be hand written but it is something. But most importantly get all the info needed to fill out the online sellers report for Wisconsin. If the new owner drives off and gets in an accident or other leagal trouble..they could abandon the vehicle and it would trace back to you. The burden of proof would lie with you. That is until the new owner registares it.
You should have it notarized would also recommend you get a receipt from the person doing the notarizing or go to title office with buyer and have it done there. Then you are definitely safe because they will issue him a new title. once he pays taxes and shows proof of insurance. That’s how we do it in ohio.
Generally speaking, I suggest you get a bill of sale, you can make it up yourself. List your name and any identifying info, the buyers info, the amount paid, the date and time, the make and model of the vehicle, as well as the VIN. (That is the long number/letter combination on the title.) After the sale, notify your insurance company of the sale. In Texas, the mileage is also required so put that on the bill of sale, and get the buyer to sign it. You can give them a copy if they want. Keep the original.
You can do that, but I would put the buyers name and address in the buyers space, mileage where it should be, and date of sale. Then I would have the buyer sign it in front of me, and make a photo copy of it for my records that I sold the vehicle. Or you can write up a statement with all the vehicle information-serial number, make, model etc., date of sale and mileage and have the buyer sign it that he purchased the vehicle. That way you have something in writing saying he purchased the vehicle. If he does NOT title or register the vehicle immediately and has an accident or what ever, you will have written documentation that you sold it on a specific date. Just make sure you get the buyer to sign and date the document.
