Do I need a motorcycle license to ride a Vespa or Piaggio scooter?
Laws vary by state and by model, but in Georgia as with most other states, you will need a class M endorsement or motorcycle license for vehicles that do not qualify as mopeds. Generally, vehicles over 50cc are considered motorcycles. For more complete information, please visit the New Rider Info section of this web site.
UK law states that anyone wishing to ride a Scooter (or any MotorCycle) must hold a Provisional or Full drivers license and take a ‘CBT’ – Compulsory Bike Training. 17yrs of age and upwards.
There are two parts to it essentially.
First is the off road training (normally a large Car Park type area) – Pulling away, U-turns, figure of eight, emergency braking, slow riding, etc.
The second part is on road practice, like maintaining speed, road safety & knowledge. Learning about junctions, roundabouts, etc.
Training should last 1 full day, unless the instructor wishes to give you more training.
You can NOT fail a CBT.
Pass certificate last’s 2 yrs from date of pass completion.
