I know that they recommend that you buy a new mattress but I’m not sure what the link is between an old mattress and SIDs. I could kind of understand it if you’d bought a second hand cot and mattress from someone else and didn’t know the history of it (stored in damp loft for example) but as this is YOUR second hand mattress I cannot see how it could do any harm. I did use my son’s cot and mattress for my daughter – but will get a new one for my newborn son once he is out of his moses basket. The only reason for it this time is the mattress is now 10 years old and has not been used for four years.
