Do intrathecal drugs have to be stored in a locked designated refrigerator or is a locked designated storage area acceptable?
Answer It is desirable not to store intrathecal drugs outside the Pharmacy between preparation and administration. When this does occur, it is expected that there will be compliance with the requirement in the guidance to use a lockable refrigerator reserved for the purpose. Although concerns have been raised about the appropriateness of using refrigerated storage, the guidance should be followed. It would also be appropriate to ensure that local procedures reflect the importance of providing dedicated, lockable facilities in the Pharmacy for storage of intrathecal drugs between preparation and issue.
