Do magnets work underwater?
As everyone has said, the answer is that magnets do work underwater. That doesn’t mean that things that stay together on land will definately still stick together underwater. Objects that are submerged have another force acting on them, which is a bouyancy force. This pushes all objects upwards to some extent. It’s why inflatables float “on the surface” (in reality it’s near the surface) of the water. A magnetic force is such that it call pull through anything, solid, liquid, gas or vacuum. However that does not mean that the metal that is attracted to it can move as freely. An iron filing may well move 20mm to a magnet through air, but the resistance of movement given by the water will be more than that, so it might only move from 5mm away.
