Irradiation means simply that something has been exposed to radiation.  There are two types of radiation, however.  Microwaves are called nonionizing radiation. These are the same types of waves that are used by television and radio, but a different frequency.  Generally when people talk about radiation, they are talking about ionizing radiation such as gamma rays, which are much higher energy and can cause damage to cells and genetics. When people speak about irradiating food, they are talking about using ionizing radiation to kill bacteria to help preserve food.  This does not include microwaves, so microwaved food would not be considered irradiated by the definition currently in use for food irradiation.

No, the rays emitted from a microwave destroy the bacteria contained in the food product. They do not damage the food itself.  more
