Do Republicans make a habit of voting for people who abuse power, lie, and censor books?
Up until the early 20th century, it was the Republicans who represented the forces of progress and the Democrats who supported slavery, oppression, and white privilege. It wasn’t until the Republicans turned to the religious right for support that they began their slide into fascism. The fact is, both major parties in the United States are neo-liberals (that is, both parties represent the interests of authoritarianism, individualism, and red-line capitalist economics). If the USA was ever a democracy, it certainly is not one today. Getting to decide which of two wealthy lawyers get to pick your pocket every four years is not democracy. In early US communities (particularly Quaker communities in the northeast), they had no formal authority structure. People gathered in town hall meetings to vote on laws and rules by show of hand, and everyone cooperated by consent rather than coercion. THAT is democracy.
