Do Standards for the 21st-Century Learner replace the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning?
AASL has developed learning standards that expand the definition of information literacy to include multiple literacies, including digital, visual, textual, and technological, that are crucial for all learners to acquire to be successful in our information-rich society. The 1998 publication, Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning, define nine key standards and the indicators of what makes an information literate student. Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, while acknowledging the key role of information literacy in student learning, also acknowledges that school library programs must address multiple literacies.
