Do teen magazines send out the wrong signals to teen girls?
Yes I think they do. However I don’t think it’s the magazine features that are generally to blame, but rather the adverts (Though obviously the magazine publishers are responsible for allowing the adverts to be published in their magazines). Whilst the magazine features will have advice on safe sex, waiting until you’re ready, being healthy, having self confidence and self esteem whatever your size, etc, the adverts are full of skinny half-naked girls getting steamy with guys. Due to all the media stories about anorexia, underage/binge drinking, STIs and teen pregnancies, girls now expect magazines to be “responsible” and “safe” in the advice they give, but look to the girls in the adverts to see what’s really going to make them popular, sexy and attractive.
