Do the birds in the southern hemisphere fly north in the summer?

Many do, but it’s not as dramatic or well-known a phenomenon as the southward migration of northern breeding birds. For one thing, if you look at a globe you’ll notice that there’s a lot less land area south of the equator than north, so there’s more space for bird populations to live and breed in the northern hemisphere. Another factor is who’s doing the research. Europen countries and the United States have traditionally been leaders in ornithological research, so a lot of migration research has been focused on birds that breed in Europe and/or North America and fly south for the winter. Some of the southern breeding species that migrate north for the austral winter are illustrated on the migration maps published by National Geographic.
