ESL 095 and ENG 095 can be considered equivalent courses. They have the same exit criteria and they are both the final gate through which students must pass before taking ENG 101. Because ENG 095 is usually made up of mostly native speakers, and ESL 095 is made up of students whose first language is not English, the type of grammar instruction may differ. ESL 095 students also need help in developing more idiomatic usage and/or appropriate language for writing formal essays. ESL 062 has some correspondence to ENG 088 in that both courses focus on developing greater fluency (longer more sustained pieces of writing) and more polished language and better grammar. Some grammar topics may overlap. However, there are some basic differences. ENG 088 students are native speakers of English and their writing is usually more idiomatic. ESL 094 is an intermediary step between ESL 062 and ESL 095. For the reasons mentioned above, it may take ESL students a little longer to develop the proficiency
