Do the looper thread cones on serger sewing machines use up thread faster than the needle cones?
One way to see exactly where each thread goes is put four different colors of thread on the machine. Then serge a test strip and you can see that the looper threads get used up much more quickly than the needle threads. This is because of the overcasting the loopers do they create the loops of thread that go from the seam created by the needle to the edge of the fabric to keep the edge from unraveling. Or as Wikipedia says it: “An overlock stitch sews over the edge of one or two pieces of cloth for edging, hemming or seaming. Usually an overlock sewing machine will cut the edges of the cloth as they are fed through (such machines are called ‘sergers’), though some are made without cutters. The inclusion of automated cutters allows overlock machines to create finished seams easily and quickly. An overlock sewing machine differs from a lockstitch sewing machine in that it utilizes loopers fed by multiple thread cones rather than a bobbin. Loopers serve to create thread loops that pass fr
