Do the UKs unemployment statistics take people on long term disability benefit into account?

No, they aren’t. The situation is a bit different than in the United States. In either country, only people who are considered to be potentially part of the work force can be included in unemployment statistics. However, in the UK, the law still labels a person with a disability as “unemployable” most of the time. That practice was legally abandoned in the US years ago. As a result, in the US a person who is looking for work is included in unemployment figures whether or not they have a disability. In the UK a person with disability is not counted at all.
