Do these Logitech speakers have volume control actually ON the speakers?

No, there are cords for each speaker that plug into the base unit. That base unit plugs into your TV or computer. The volume knob is on the side of the cradle and doesn’t work from a volume control in your computer. It is from that remote control you adjust the volume and treble.bass. For strictly music, the X-240 is the way to go. For the price, you cannot beat it I have the Logitech X-540 that work in a similar way…they work just great. I recommend them over the X-240 because it provides surround sound over stereo that’s nice if you enjoy gaming.
