Do US senators pay federal taxes?
The 16th Amendment requires that all citizens pay a tax on income, regardless of the source. However, prior to 1983 U.S. senators were enrolled in the Civil Service Retirement System, which exempted them from paying Social Security taxes. In 1984, PL 98-21 took effect requiring all federal employees to contribute to Social Security in addition to other federal taxes already required.Source:P.L. 98-21, Social Security Amendments of 1983United States Senate: Congress & Social Security taxesUnited States Senate: Senate Salaries since 1789More Information:Social Security Contribution and Benefit Base16th Amendment, U.S.
