Yes they work. The general idea is to make a replica of the person using part of them and then through visualization the replica becomes them and you can manipulate the doll which manipulates them because they are connected and essentially the doll is them. I've done one once, though I call them poppets, to heal a friend after she asked me to. It worked nicely. Personally I would never do one to hurt someone or without their permission because I believe in karma. I wouldn't want someone else malevolently interfering with my life so I give everyone else the same courtesy.
