Curandero’s are people that practice the white aspect of mexican folk magic. They perform mostly healing and cleanings. Witch doctors are considered African shamans. However in Africa they are called Medicine Men. Weather we believe in what they do is irrelevant. Those that receive services from them believe it is real. I practice Vodou. In Vodou you must have some faith in the lwa and trust in the Mambo/Hougan. If your heart is not open to the possibility you will be unable to receive the blessings. I believe in the blessings because I have had them. I have had my high blood pressure cured and severe neck and shoulder pain stopped. I have also receive others things I have asked for. It is not the curanderno, witch doctor, medicine man, shaman, mambo or hougan that do the work. It is the spirits that they work with that do the work. The people are the catalyst. Yes, of course! Ritual has power for everyone! Take for example the ritual of baptism, of graduation ceremonies, even the ritual of kissing a loved one good-bye in the morning. Humans respond to ritual on a deep level, often feel as if the world is not right if a ritual is neglected. And then, there’s the energy work participated in by the patient or recipient. We all perform energy work on a daily basis in simple, unconscious ways. We think, today, I’m going to do this or that. Then, we often find that circumstances conspire to support our thoughts. Ie: If we feel that something might go wrong, we fulfill that and draw that experience to us, and vica versa. Belief that evokes an emotional response is a powerful tool. Yes, I believe that curanderas are able to perform powerful acts of healing.
