Do you need a drivers license to drive a vespa?
In California, you need what’s known as an M2 license (motor-driven cycles). The requirements are listed below and I suspect most US states will have similar requirements (check your state DMV for more info, your mileage may vary) To apply for a motorcycle Class M1 or M2 permit, you will need to: * Be at least 15 ½ years of age * Visit a DMV office * Complete application form DL 44 * Have your parents’ or guardians’ signatures * Give a thumb print * Have your picture taken * Submit proof you have completed both driving education and driver training. * Present an acceptable birth date/legal presence document. * Provide your true full name. * Provide your social security number. * Pay the required application fee. * Pass an vision exam. * Pass a traffic laws and signs test. * Pass an additional law test of motorcycle driving rules. OR * Show your California driver license, if you have one issued to you.
In the U.S. does vary according to state, but most require a motorcycle license if the engine is greater than 50cc. Here in Arizona, you need a motorcycle permit if it is less than 50cc to ride on the streets legally and have it registered. That test involves simply reading a book and taking a computer test at the DMV (and something like Old School’s answer). If you have a vespa with greater than 50cc engine, you are then required to do the riding test as well.
