Well, everyone has a right to try for the life they want to have. But, in both cases, native americans and states do not have a right to being a sovereign country any more than I do. What they do have is the right to TRY for it, and, if they succeed, to defend it. States and native americans can’t just be handed a gift certificate for a new country. That’s not how the world works (unless you’re Israel) and it’s not how it should work. Why? Because it takes the value away. There is difference between (1) being handed a golden ticket for your wildest dreams and (2) turning your wildest dreams into reality because you fought for those dreams. These two scenarios produce very different feelings and reactions. I’m not trying to sound insensitive. I think what happened in the settling of North America was incredibly unkind and disgustingly barbaric. But, from a strictly objective point of view, europeans came to north america and conquered the native people because they were more advanced in

Native American tribes have the right to become independent, sovereign nations. In fact, the Lakotah Sioux have declared that they are unilaterally withdrawing from their treaties with the US because of the failure of the US to abide by them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of… The states are independent of the federal government, but the Constitution did not give them the right to conduct international affairs or coin money.

Indians don’t, but states do. The difference is simple. One is the foundation of the nation and the Constitution, and the other is not. States CHOSE to be part of the United States; they didn’t have to be. That is a little thing called FREE CHOICE, which liberals are all about when it comes to the hedonist desire to kill the unborn, but really in no other situation. Reservations exist at the behest of the United States government. This is not true of the states. They are sovereign entities; reservations are not. You may want the destruction of the United States by enemy Indian states all around it and in it, but this was not and is not the desire of the United States Constitution.

Well non of these non- Native people know what they are talking about…especially Hwinnum. Just cuz someone wrote something on wiki doesn’t mean anything. The group you speak of has few Lakotas in it and is not supported by the people, not even the traditionals. Now for some education. Under international law we are Independant Nations. When your armies could not completely defeat us the best option was a treaty, which is an agreement sighned by insependant Nations without negating the independance of either Nation. We are our Nations first…for me that Nation is Lakota, for my husband that Nation is Mohawk. Your words and actions will never end that. This isn’t about the wrongs of 200 yrs ago. This is about treatys….which are still valid today (according to international law), and it is about those traties being broken NOW. As for the states, they were independant, I think the constition changed that despite still using terms such as states which infers independance, although that
