Do you think the building has the capacity to accommodate all Dar es Salaam petty traders?
A. We are told that the building will have sufficient space to contain between 5000 and 10,000 traders. But the problem has been proper and fair distribution of the spaces. VIBINDO will fight hard to ensure that only eligible petty traders are given priority. We will not allow the building to be grabbed by big traders who would later sub-lease trading spaces to poor petty traders. Q. What are other problems and challenges that are facing petty traders in this country? A. Recently, we conducted survey in four regions of Mbeya, Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Mwanza and came to discover four major problems which as VIBINDO we think they deserve immediate attention. These were lack of credit, permanent trading premises, training to our members, and poor knowledge of existing legislations. In order to address these problems, it was agreed that a strategic plan be put in place that will partly include studying urban master plans and forge close collaboration with the local governments.
