Yes. Much of the government was destabilised in the earthquake, this may be a window for international influence and to rebuild the government and country with more sound government and economics. It is not as violent a place as one would think by the western media’s interpretation. I was there in August of 2005 and felt entirely safe without a tour or protection. They are very poor, but not violent, at least not toward foreigners. If anything, the desperately poor are violent toward the wealthy few in their government that oppress them. It is a horrible tragedy right now, but with careful management and international aid, I believe some good can come of it and Haiti will be on its way to a more balanced society.
