Does a dog have to be kennel club reg for it to be a pure pedigree?

You have to prove your dog is pedigree before you can register it with the kennel club. We have a pure pedigree Boxer. We have got her family history going back 4 generations and all are pure breeds.

Firstly, this is very vague. It would be nice to have some more details in the question. However, if a dog of pure bred background does not have papers it is unlikely to have come from a reputable source. Even dogs not of show quality can be registered though there may be limits, notation that it should be neutered or spayed. There is something called a limited registration that one can do for companion animals of pedigree which means that none of their offspring can be registered. What pure pedigree or I suppose you mean pure bred means is that all the dogs ancestors (to a reasonable limit backward in time) are of the same breed. It does not have anything to do with registration but the bloodlines of the dog.

A Pedigree is paper work showing the parentage of that dog. It shows who in that line has championships, the blood line to date, it gives the names of all the ancestors, like a family tree. The pedigree means a lot to competent breeders. They buy puppies sight unseen because of pedigrees. AKC or CKC are registry clubs. It is the pedigree that tells you a dog is breed well. AKC papers mean nothing, except that their name is on a list. They register litters sight unseen and that whole little will be nothing but pet quality dogs. But, if you want to participate in any of their functions you have to have a dog registered with them. A good dog will come with his/her own Pedigree.

A dog can be PUREBRED and not have kennel club registration papers. It can be purebred (registered OR unregistered) and have a pedigree – a pedigree is a listing of the dogs parents, grandparents & back – it is only showing lineage, not a registration. Dogs sold without REGISTRATION papers generally come from unethical backyard breeders, who were sold the parents dogs with pet quality registration papers (limited registration, i.e. NOT breeding quality).
