Does any medical professional know if procrit really works for anemia or is it pharmaceutical co. making money?

My dad is 89 in good health, other than anemia due to anodyne kidneys. Procrit is very expensive and I wonder if its really necessary. He hasn’t noticed much change since he’s be on it; a little more energy, that’s it.
