Does anyone have a comment on the Chaos Theory?
Chaos theory is an interesting branch of mathematics that describes chaotic behavior mathematically and, in particular, shows how chaotic behavior can result from simple and deterministic equations. It was an important conceptual breakthrough when the theory was popularized, because there are many physical systems whose chaotic behavior was misunderstood previously. In the theory, you write down simple equations that describe the dynamical evolution of a nonlinear system from some starting condition. If you choose the equations well, the system will be highly sensitive to those initial conditions, and the system will seem to be following a random trajectory, when in fact it is completely deterministic. There are many beautiful theorems that can be proven about such systems, and this is what gets mathematicians excited.
