Tagged As: Beginner Guitar Player Question: Does anyone have any recommendations for a lower priced yet good sounding acoustic/electric guitar for a beginner? I played years ago but have lost the touch. I have been a bluegrass banjo player for years. I would like a guitar that could stand up for a bluegrass sound but that I could also plug in to an amp so I can play with my son. Answer: In general I’d avoid getting an acoustic electric guitar as a beginners purchase. Get a good sounding and playing acoustic guitar if that’s what you want. If you must plug in and play on stage, add a good internal pickup later. You mention the desire to play with bluegrass players and then plugged in with your son who I’m going to guess plays electric. Unless the vary lowest cost is the issue, consider a good basic electric guitar. $200 used can get you a good sounding and playing electric guitar, not much more than you’d pay for the A/E model of a good sounding acoustic guitar. I’m not a bluegrass play
