Does anyone have breeding tips for rats?
First of all, you should decide if this is something you really want to do. There are a LOT of animals out there without homes, animal centres are usually full to the brim, and with rodents/small animals it can be a particular problem as so many people want to breed. I’m guilty of this myself as I used to breed chinchillas, but after a couple of years I stopped as I realised just how many of them there already were looking for homes. It can also be heart-breaking sometimes and a lot of work. You need to save up a lot of money in case things go wrong as it will be your responsibility to rush them to the vets if it does. I bought a breeding chinnie from a breeder, who gave birth a couple of days later but then suddently got ill. It cost us a LOT at our vets, and she unfortunately passed away which meant I had to hand-rear the kit which meant I had to feed her every two hours for a few weeks (no sleep, it’s hard!).
