Miss Havisham memorable for having been jilted on her wedding day and living her life ever after amongst the ruins of the wedding breakfast dressed in her decaying bridal gown. Brilliantly protrayed by Martita Hunt in David Lean’s film adaptation. Hers is a twilight world where time has stood still at the hour she received news of her abandonment, devoid of daylight or other natual joy – her only diversion that of her adopted Estelle whom she has embittered and the prospect of using her to break some other unfortunate’s heart. She allows the impression she is Pip’s benefactress to go uncorrected to exercise control over him, ensnaring him like the spiders that spin their webs over the rotting house she inhabits. She dies at the point Pip finally abandons her having seen her for what she is and the destructive and malignant presence she has been in his life. She is a powerful and grotesque figure, wealthy and spiteful – in the grand dame tradition of Norma Desmond and Bette Davis’s Baby
