Get the new handle and put the end of the “L” into the hole with the clasp as close to the body of the handle as possible. (Otherwise, it will block the wire rod and the end of the “L” will not go 100% into the hole like it is supposed to. Also it needs to be near the door handle because, if it is away from it, the opening in the clasp will be pointing in the wrong direction and you will have start over again. Mine was a left door handle; if yours is a right handle this could be opposite.) Now push the clasp over the long part of the “L” shaped wire rod — you can use a screwdriver as a lever. You are almost done. Check the lever on the handle to make sure it opens the door. Push the entire handle into the door, line up the screw hole and put the screw in as tight as you can. (I suspect that the screw getting lose over the years causes wiggling in the wire rod and more torque which eventually breaks the hole/clasp assembly or the back part of the handle, or both.
