Does anyone know if porcupines and beavers like the smell of peppermint?

I’m guessing from your topics that you’re wondering whether whether peppermint is an effective repellent against porcupines and beavers. I’m not finding any evidence at all that it’s an attractive odor to them, and there are a few “natural” repellents out there that contain peppermint oil (among other things)and claim effectiveness against a whole bunch of critters, including beavers. Verifying those claims is a different matter (there are tons of “natural” insect repellents, for instance, most of which have demonstrated no real effectiveness). The EPA recognizes only one substance as an effective beaver repellent, denatonium saccharide (Ro-pel®). It’s a bitter compound meant to be sprayed on trees. This paper out of University of Nebraska found spearmint oil (and a few other substances) to repel porcupines. This paper out of the USDA, though, says that taste and odor based repellents are pretty much ineffective against herbivores.
