Chocolate comes from the cacao (cocoa) bean, grown in southern Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, the beans were toasted, ground and added to hot water. Chile, flowers, cinnamon and other spices were added to make a hot beverage. It was not sweetened. It was a beverage reserved for nobles and Moctezuma reportedly drank several cups a day. The beans were also used as currency.  It did not become chocolate until the Spanish conquistadors took it to Europe, where it was later combined with sugar.
