You're gonna have to look into "flowers, literature and symbolism" - however most symbolism is traced back into the use inside of the story. Common motifs are the most obvious: innocence, virginity, warmth, and tranquility. After that you need to read the color of the flower into the written work, such as passion red, white for chastity, yellow for understanding and love. In your research try looking at the background of the author, such as Walt Whitman, Robert Frost & whoever else you're reading about. Good luck!!  more

Flowers traditionally have meanings by themselves; those meanings may change a little when writers use them. Ever read Hamlet? Ophelia strews flowers about when she goes mad, and all those flowers have meanings. They subtley say how she feels about certain people.
