The National Socialist Party was started in 1919 by Anton Drexler, Gottfried Feder and Dietrich Eckart, under the name of the German Worker’s Party. Hitler reluctantly joined soon after, after being convinced to do so by his commanding officer, Captain Karl Mayr. In 1920, Hitler suggested that they change the name to National Socialist German Workers Party.
