Yes, you need to keep biocides (chemicals that kill animals, such as rat poison) out of the SmartWasher. The same goes for bleach and Lysol. Ozzy can survive among greases, oils, mineral spirits, plant fertilizers, etc. Also, since Ozzy is a living microbe he does need to feed. If you are in a period where you are not using your SmartWasher you may add just a cap full of oil straight to the solution to give the microbes something to feed on.
