DOES BELIEF IN GOD HELP CONTROL BEHAVIOR?
Wayne Everett Orgar December 2000 First, let’s have a lesson from the Bible. According to the Judeo/Christian tradition and text, Solomon was one of the wisest men to ever have lived. He talked to his god and his god talked to him. He was a strong leader, the last king who was able to keep his nation together. After his death, the nation split into Israel in the north and Judah in the south with separate kings. There can be no doubt that Solomon believed in his god and had supposedly seen this god’s power for his entire life. Did this help Solomon control his s—–l behavior? Absolutely not! According to I Kings, chapter 11, Solomon had affairs with many pagan women, including the daughter of Pharaoh. (This was beside his 700 wives and 300 concubines!) He was so out of control, he built places of worship for the gods of these pagan women because of their influence. This was not a “youthful indiscretion” for verse 4 says it happened when he was old.
