Depends on the cause and whether it is a chronic or acute scenario. There are people who live for considerable time with chronic cirrhosis, if it is related to alcohol abuse (as in George Best), then the longer term survival will rely heavily on the patient stopping otherwise the damage will continue and greatly hasten death.
