Does Dance Drama need to have dialogue?
Elliot. I am part of a drama group, and we often do Dance Drama – Physical Theatre. Some key things: Semiotics – think about what the overall image is with the actors on stage, use blocking (the arrangement of actors) to create this. Dialogue – is not absolutely necessary, but can be useful. Poems are good for the actors to memorise, if you are looking for a more arty approach. This should only be attempted if you have good speakers among your troupe. Sometimes it is more powerful just for one word to be said. If you intend not to use dialogue, semiotics ought really to be your priority, and you must work on this with your troupe before beginning the piece of theatre. In physical theatre, motion must be as a dance – but using bodies to create obvious scenarios and moods.
