Does fluoxetine cause bloating or weight gain?
• A: Prozac (fluoxetine) is a medication that is used to treat depression as well as other conditions such as anxiety or panic disorder. Fluoxetine is in the class of medications called SSRIs that work to bring a balance to the chemical serotonin in the brain, that when becomes unbalanced, causes the symptoms you experience. The prescribing information on fluoxetine does not specifically mention bloating as a side effect. It does list weight gain/weight loss as a side effect that occurred in at least 1 percent of patients taking the medication. The prescribing information lists the following as common side effects of the medication: insomnia, weakness, nausea, indigestion, drowsiness, anxiety, dry mouth, yawning, sweating, constipation, gas, taste changes, increased or decreased appetite (weight loss or weight gain).
