Does having two womens leagues weaken the position of womens pro basketball?
Alison Hodges: I don’t think it actually weakens it in the sense of what we’re trying to achieve for women in sports, but a lot of times it’s confusing to some people. I know that when we opened up the basketball organisation here, in one of the largest markets, everyone assumed that it should have been the WNBA and not the ABL. So a lot of our sponsors go ‘Well you’re not the WNBA and so we’ll just wait for them’ sort of thing. So it’s sort of hampered some of the expectations that a market like this had. But that’s why it’s so important that we have to make sure this league succeeds and when the WNBA gets here, we hope they don’t take all the regional dollars away. So it’s sort of confusing in a sense, but at the same time the WNBA has more marketing than we do. Of course when you have a machine like the NBA behind you, there’s no way you’re not going to be recognised.
