No, having Joint Physical Custody does not mean you pay or receive less child support. However, Michigan has adopted a parental time offset based on the assumption that as a parent spends more time with their children they will directly contribute a greater share of the child’s expenses. An offset for parental time generally applies to every support determination. Therefore, having joint physical custody is different than how much time the child(ren) spends with each parent. The number of overnights is the determining factor in child support reduction.
