Does Mamie still make the bonnets and hats?
Over a relatively short period of time Mamie seems to have made more than a lifetime’s worth of bonnets and hats. Seems every time she answered the phone it was, “Well, I’m sewing another buttonhole.” Betty and Roger Hodge of Land’s End, St. Helena Island (in Beaufort County), and Wanda Ardell, who also sews designer draperies for decorators, now lend us their helping hands. Besides doing exquisite work, they make sure that extra whiff of fresh salty Lowcountry air goes into each item. Mamie still inspects each bonnet and hat before shipping.
