Does multiculturalism apply only to newcomers?
• Multiculturalism policy is for all Canadians; the programs benifit all Canadians. • Promoting equality, eliminating racial discrimination, and ensuring that everyone has a place in Canadian society concerns everyone, not just newcomers. • Multiculturalism is a two-way street, it: • helps people to be active citizens; and • encourages Canadian society to let everyone participate fully. Multiculturalism is the bridge that brings people together. On the other hand, it is concerned with the long-term integration of newcomers through activities like: • a symposium to help seniors adjust to living in todays sociey; and • projects to help first-generation Canadians become familiar with volunteering, parent-teacher relations, voting etc..
