Does my institution’s consumer information clearly outline for students how extensive ESL coursework can affect Pell Grant and Federal Student Loan eligibility?
If your school permits a student to enroll in ESL or other reme-dial courses that don’t apply to his degree or certificate, be aware that awarding FSA loans over a series of semesters for such work can ex-haust his eligibility for FSA loans before he completes his program. Pell Grants may only be awarded for up to 18 semesters or the equivalent, for students who first received a Pell award on or after July 1, 2008. ESL courses alone or a combination of ESL and developmental level coursework could exhaust eligibility before completing a program.
