Closed captions are carried in a special data channel embedded in the MPEG-2 video data recorded on a DVD. The player extracts any captioning information included on the disk and embeds it in the video signal sent to the TV. The selection and display of closed captions is then done using the TV’s remote control. TVs manufactured prior to 1993 may require a separate decoder for handling closed captions. If closed captions are included on a DVD, the player automatically passes them to the TV. Subtitles, on the other hand, are DVD sub-pictures – full-screen graphic overlays that can be included with the main video image. Up to 32 sub-picture tracks can be included on a DVD.
