Does Obama want two official languages for America?
No, Obama does not want two official languages. America has endured 232 years without an official language, primarily as a means of embracing other cultures, an aspect of America that has long been a source of pride within this country. At the time that the constitution was written, many Americans spoke German. Further, in the South, near what would become Florida, many spoke Spanish. The nation didn’t think to try to push for a national language at the time, as we were attempting to be embrasive of people of different cultures. When Florida became a state, many Spaniards lived in the region, and there was no push to force them to speak English. After the Louisiana Purchase, many spoke French in the parts of the area inhabited by non native Americans, yet there was no push for a National language. In the 1930’s most immigrants spoke German, and were subjected to profound prejudice by many citizens, but the government didn’t feel a need to press an official language on to the population
