The bottle doesn’t have to face down. Horizontal is probably the easiest. The purpose is to keep the cork wet and not in contact with the air in the bottle. This keeps the cork expanded, keeps a tight seal, and prevents oxygen from entering the bottle. This is the reason you look at the cork and smell it before being served a glass.
